Can I get Medicare through my Spouse?
You may be eligible to get Medicare benefits through your Spouse if:
1. You are under 65 and receive disability*
*You automatically get Part A and Part B after you get one of these:
· Disability benefits from Social Security for 24 months
· Certain disability benefits from the Rail Road for 24 months
2. You are over 65; but you have not paid Social Security taxes for at least 10 years
A. If you are 65 or older and
B. your spouse has worked and paid Social Security taxes for at least 10 years –
C. your spouse is 62 or older..
You are eligible to receive benefits under the following conditions:
· You and your eligible spouse have been married at least 1 year – or
· You are divorced, now single, & you were married to your eligible spouse for 10+ years – or
· You are widowed, now single, and were married to your late eligible spouse for at least 9 months
Part A premiums Most people get premium-free Part A (Hospital Insurance) at 65 if:.
- you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes for 40** quarters (about 10 years)
- You already get retirement Benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board.
- You’re eligible to get Social Security or Railroad benefits but haven’t filed for them yet.
- You or your spouse had Medicare-covered government employment.
**If you paid Medicare taxes for less than 30 quarters, the standard Part A premium is $437.
**If you paid Medicare taxes for 30-39 quarters, the standard Part A premium is $240.
Part B premiums Medicare Part B requires a monthly premium – not a work history.
Most beneficiaries pay a $135.50 premium for 2019.
